ANNOUNCEMENTS

Remarkable ‘Old Redding’ couple — Everett & Martha Coe

Uncategorized

Thank you, Mike Fitzgerald, for this e-mail:

Hello Marc,

I enjoy reading your columns on my visits to Redding and my dad, Bill, enjoyed the article that referenced the community lecture series that he founded at Shasta College in the 1960s; and he was pleased to learn that your column led to the founding of a new lecture series that was inaugurated last year.

I thought I would pass along an item of interest about the neighbors who lived next door to you when you were growing up in Lower Sunset Terrace – Everett (Joe) and Martha Coe. Both Martha and Joe were remarkable persons and had lasting impacts on my parents, our shared high school German teacher Richard O’Brien, and others, including the noted Hollywood film producer Kathleen Kennedy.

Martha was one of the first women admitted to Stanford University’s School of Medicine but contracted tuberculosis, was required to discontinue her studies, and had to be confined to a sanitarium. During her convalescence, she and her sister Lucy wrote two mystery novels under the name of M.M. Mannon (Mannon was their maiden name) that were published by the renowned firm of Bobbs Merrill. The two novels wereHere Lies Blood (scanned copy of the paperback book cover attached) and Murder on the Program. Here Lies Blood sold well enough to be reprinted in a wartime paperback edition. Martha was modest about her literary success and I did not know if you were aware of this. In addition to her academic and literacy accomplishments, Martha was noted for the elegant seven-course gourmet dinners (each course paired with the appropriate wine) that she and Joe hosted at their home during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s; a custom unheard of in Redding in that era and my wife and I have kept the issues of Gourmet  magazine from this period that Martha had given to my late mother.

Joe was a scholarship student to our alma mater of UC Berkeley, entered the Foreign Service during World War II, and was one of the first career Foreign Service officers to serve in post-war Warsaw. While stationed there he witnessed firsthand the aftermath of the destruction inflicted upon Poland during the war. He later served in Haiti during Papa Doc Duvalier’s reign of terror before retiring and devoting the rest of his career to teaching. He was both a mentor to young teachers like my parents (Bill and Dorothy), his student and, later, colleague Richard O’Brien, and countless others at Shasta High. He and Martha were great lovers of opera and attended annual performances at La Scala in Milan each season and epitomized both grace and an engagement with a world far beyond Redding.

Last, my dad remembers that the Martha and Joe had a small painting you made as a child hanging in their retirement home in Berry Creek near Oroville.

Best regards and I hope this is of interest to you. The Coes were a terrific couple and are fondly remembered.

Mike

Shasta High School 45th Reunion:

In the event any classmates attending the 2015 reunion July 24-25 will be seeking lodging accommodations, you might note that my neighbors operate a 3-room bed-n-breakfast that is just a few steps away from the Elks Lodge. Not only is the location practically literally in the Elks Lodge's back yard, but the hosts (Ric and Connie Apple) are delightfully fun people. You can view the property at www.applesriverhouse.com. Mention to Ric or Connie you'd like the "friends of Dick Lehman" discount.

10/1/14. Today we lost Craig Fowler. He was a strong proponent for organizing rock and roll events. Fronting the vocals, guitar chops & PA, his enthusiasm moved forward through out the songs.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE EVENT FOR CRAIG FOWLER is scheduled for NOVEMBER 15 LuLu's Redding, starting at 4:00 we'll have an impromptu memorial, share stories and reconnect with old friends. The memorial jam will start about 6:00 and continue until? There will be a limited amount of appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages provided. Full restaurant and bar service are available on a no-host basis. Please share this with everybody that you think might have known Craig.
